WAKEFERN FOOD CORPORATION

The Wakefern Food Corporation is a corporate member of the SNAP-Ed Support Network that participates in educational activities for the SNAP population. ShopRite has established a year-round community based program to fight hunger in communities served by ShopRite stores. The program is committed to helping feed and meets the nutritional needs of families and the elderly who otherwise may go without. In its second year ShopRite Partners in Caring is donating money to qualified local agencies and charities for use at area food banks. ShopRite's goal is to focus attention on the hunger problem by involving its Associates and Customers in the battle against hunger in the ShopRite communities and beyond. The Wakefern Food Corporation has also conducted "Five A Day" promotions and provided special coupons for fresh fruits and vegetables to SNAP participants and has participated in the "SNAP Nutrition Challenge" Program. Shop Rite coordinates and provides food-pricing information for the SNAP-Ed Program. The SNAP-Ed Support Network and Wakefern are currently working on a sponsorship agreement for the "Calcium In Lead Out" Social Marketing Campaign. Future plans include a partnership between the Network and Partners in caring .The New Jersey Network will be hosting a show sponsored by ShopRite Partners in Caring. The show will focus on "Food Insecurity in NJ" and how poor nutrition affects children. Dr. Michael Hamm, Chair of Rutgers Department of Nutritional Sciences will be featured on the show.
